The Forge is the only authentic Shaolin Kung Fu school in Wyoming. Head instructor Shi Miao Hao (JJ Steelman) is a 36th-generation Shaolin warrior monk who trained for nearly two years at the Shaolin Monastery in Dengfeng, Henan Province, China. Adults Traditional class meets Mon/Wed/Fri at 6:30 PM.
Shaolin Kung Fu is the foundational Chinese martial art developed by Buddhist monks at the Shaolin Monastery in Henan Province starting around 495 CE. According to tradition, the Indian monk Bodhidharma taught the original monks physical exercises that became the basis of Shaolin training. Over 1,500 years it evolved into hundreds of forms (tao lu), weapon styles, and internal/external practices. It influenced karate, taekwondo, kung fu film aesthetics, and most East Asian striking arts.
Shi Miao Hao (释妙浩) is the Buddhist monk name given to Jason "JJ" Steelman by his master Shifu Shi Heng Chao. "Shi" (释) is the family name shared by all Shaolin disciples — taken from the Buddha's family. The name signifies formal acceptance into the 36th generation of the Shaolin lineage, an unbroken line of succession back to the original Shaolin Temple monks.
Class begins with traditional warm-up: stance work, basic strikes, and conditioning drills. Students then practice forms (tao lu) — choreographed sequences that teach technique, balance, and power generation. Partner drills practice application of form movements. Class ends with conditioning and a brief meditation. Belt testing is held quarterly and is always free at The Forge.
No. Traditional Shaolin Kung Fu builds flexibility, strength, and conditioning over time — it does not require them at the start. The famous Shaolin conditioning is a result of years of practice, not a prerequisite. Students of all fitness levels train at their own pace.
Yes. Shaolin Kung Fu was the original martial system that influenced karate, taekwondo, and most other East Asian striking systems. It combines striking, kicking, joint manipulation, throws, and weapons. At The Forge, traditional Kung Fu is integrated with Krav Maga so students can study both classical depth and modern practical defense.
Adults Traditional class (Shaolin Kung Fu and ITF Taekwondo) meets Mon/Wed/Fri at 6:30 PM. Youth and teens get Kung Fu fundamentals in the 5:30 PM class on the same days. All classes are included in the $125/month membership. Try a free week first.
