Muay Thai & Kickboxing Classes in Cheyenne, Wyoming

Muay Thai is the national sport and martial art of Thailand — known as "the art of eight limbs" because it uses fists, elbows, knees, and shins as weapons, plus a sophisticated clinch fighting system. The Forge runs Muay Thai and kickboxing class on Tuesday and Thursday at 7:00 PM, ages 13+, all fitness levels welcome.

What is Muay Thai?

Muay Thai (Thai: มวยไทย, "Thai boxing") evolved from earlier Thai battlefield arts and was codified as a sport in the early 20th century. It is one of the most well-rounded stand-up striking systems in martial arts because it uses all eight contact points — two fists, two elbows, two knees, two shins. Modern Muay Thai also includes the clinch: a close-range fighting position where fighters control each other's posture and deliver knees and short elbows.

How is Muay Thai different from kickboxing?

Kickboxing typically uses only fists and feet/shins — no elbows, no knees, no clinch. Muay Thai uses all of those. Kickboxing is the sport-focused descendant of Muay Thai, and there is significant overlap. The Forge's class teaches Muay Thai technique with kickboxing-style conditioning, so students of any goal can train.

Do I need to spar to learn Muay Thai?

No. Sparring is optional. Most students at The Forge focus on technique, pad work, and conditioning without ever sparring. If you want to spar, equipment is required (gloves, shin guards, mouthguard) and we ramp up contact gradually so it stays safe.

What equipment do I need to start Muay Thai?

For your free trial week, nothing — just comfortable workout clothes. As you progress you'll want hand wraps and 14-16 oz boxing gloves. If you decide to spar, you'll need shin guards and a mouthguard. We can recommend brands and sizing.

Can I do Muay Thai for fitness without competing?

Absolutely — most students do exactly that. The pad work, conditioning, and technique drills are some of the best full-body workouts in martial arts. Many people start for fitness and end up loving the technique, but there is no pressure to compete or spar.

What are the main techniques in Muay Thai?

  • Punches (chok): jab, cross, hook, uppercut
  • Kicks (te): roundhouse, push kick (teep), low kick
  • Knees (khao): straight knee, diagonal knee, flying knee
  • Elbows (sok): horizontal, slashing, spinning, upward
  • Clinch (chap kho): control and short-range strikes
