What is Little Legends?

Little Legends is The Forge's curriculum for kids 5-12, designed by head instructor JJ Steelman based on 30+ years teaching children martial arts. Each class blends traditional Shaolin Kung Fu and ITF Taekwondo fundamentals with games, partner drills, and an anti-bullying response framework rooted in research from StopBullying.gov (the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services resource).

What does a kids class look like?

Class begins with a structured warm-up that doubles as listening practice — kids follow specific commands, building focus. Technique block: basic strikes, blocks, kicks, and stances appropriate for the age. Partner drills: kids work in pairs on cooperative drills that teach respect, control, and timing. Game-based application: a structured game that secretly reinforces the technique just learned. Cool-down and a brief discussion of class theme (focus, respect, courage, etc.).

What is the anti-bullying curriculum?

The Forge teaches a 5-level anti-bullying response: (1) Awareness — recognizing bullying behavior. (2) Assertiveness — using strong body language and clear words. (3) De-escalation — defusing situations verbally. (4) Reporting — knowing which adults to tell. (5) Physical defense — only as a last resort, with control. The goal is for kids to resolve 90% of situations without ever fighting. Read our full anti-bullying guide.

Will martial arts make my child aggressive?

No. Research from the National Library of Medicine consistently shows that traditional martial arts training reduces aggression and improves self-regulation in children. Our curriculum specifically emphasizes discipline, respect, and self-control. Kids learn the responsibility that comes with skill — not the entitlement.

Is martial arts good for kids with ADHD?

Yes — our most-requested topic. The structured environment, immediate feedback, physical engagement, and clear progression are exactly what many kids with ADHD respond to. See our detailed article on martial arts and ADHD.

What age can my child start?

Age 5 is our minimum. By 5, most children can follow basic group instructions, even imperfectly. Our instructors are experienced in working with neurodivergent children, kids with sensory sensitivities, and shy or anxious kids.

When are kids classes?
